Jerusalem Day 2006
May 26, 2006
Jerusalem Day is a celebration of the unification of Jerusalem during the Six Day war of 1967. Israeli paratroopers stormed the Old City through the Zion Gate and within hours General Mordechai Gur, commander of the Israeli paratroopers, announced, "The Temple Mount is in our hands!" Jerusalem Day was made a national holiday in 1968 by the Israeli government commemorating the event.
Celebrations this week have been festive as Israeli school children tour the Old City visiting the sites and commemorating one of Israel's greatest moments. The entire city is alive each night with fireworks, laser shows, and different Israeli musicians performing in Independence Park in the heart of modern day Jerusalem. Every evening the streets are closed to traffic and are filled with pedestrians visiting the different areas where 182 Israelis lost their lives in the battles for Jerusalem.
President Moshe Katsav and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert made heartfelt speeches on Wednesday, May 25 to a large audience on "Ammunition Hill" where one of the fiercest battles for Jerusalem occurred. Olmert proclaimed, "There never was and there never will be another home for the Jewish people." President Katsav said, "Jerusalem is the religious, national and cultural center of the Jewish people since ancient days and for eternity. Jerusalem continues to be an inspiration for all Jews in Israel and the Diaspora."

The city of Jerusalem is still in a struggle for survival. Nations and world leaders refuse to acknowledge Jerusalem as Israel's capital and continually pressure Israel to divide her capital city once again and relinquish it as a co-capital with the Palestinian people. Palestinian leaders continually call for Israel to withdraw "to the borders of June 4, 1967" which would once again divide Jerusalem and place 300,000 residents in a new emerging Palestinian state. Israel is resisting these requests and her leaders continually reaffirm Israeli citizens that Jerusalem will remain the Israeli capital and will not be divided again.
Celebrations in Israel mean a time of national patriotism in the midst of heightened security and the highest levels of alert. IDF troops were posted less than 100 feet apart around the entire old city and multiple random checkpoints encompass the city as Israelis remain vigilant to protect her capital, Jerusalem, even with their very lives. Jerusalem Day is a truly heroic day for the Israeli people.
