Israel To Be Included in a WMD free Middle East
February 10, 2006
Israel is once again the target of international pressure to forfeit her defenses and entrust her national security to the international community. In exchange for its recommendation to report Iran to the UN Security Council, Egypt has convinced the United States and Europe to include a clause in the UN proposal that would ensure the entire Middle East to be free of weapons of mass destruction (wmds) and their delivery systems. This clause is aimed directly at disarming the nation of Israel. 27 out of the 35 member countries of the IAEA are in agreement.
If the UN ratifies and enforces sanctions against Iran, it will be obligated to pursue the implementation of the included clause and disarm Israel. The clause is extremely broad and would potentially include chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons as well as any missile that could possibly accommodate a warhead. In effect any weapon large enough to reach Israel’s neighbors would be under scrutiny and possibly confiscated or destroyed. With facilities in the Negev desert and Dimona, Israel has the capability of producing nuclear weapons but has never formally denied or admitted to having nuclear weapons. Israel does have several varieties of ballistic missiles that can be launched from land or sea.
Iran is under international pressure for violating the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) which it signed and ratified. Israel on the other hand is one of three nations in Asia that is not a signatory of the NPT and thus not included in the IAEA’s inforcement of the treaty. Israel is not in violation of any of its international obligations, yet Israel is the excuse that Iran always uses for developing nuclear technology. Iran calls “foul” when the international community pressures them to abide by their commitments because Israel is not held to the same standard.
The leadership of Iran has recently made their intentions clear concerning the nation of Israel. They wish to see her annihilated and removed from the world map. Iran is currently soliciting the most vile, anti-Semitic comic to be ran in Teheran’s largest circulated newspaper. Iran repeatedly calls for the destruction of the nation of Israel. In 1999 the speaker of the Iranian Parliament said that other Arab nations should come out openly like Iran and say that they don’t accept such a country as Israel on the world map. He called for courage on behalf of their militaries to join forces, equipment and weapons to destroy Israel. If Iran produces an atomic weapon, their number one target would be Israel. According to Ali Khamenei Israel is a cancerous tumor that must be uprooted from the region and that the obliteration of Israel should be the perpetual aim of Iran.
In such a hostile environment as the Middle East where every neighbor of Israel is calling for her immediate destruction, should Israel surrender her arsenal of defensive weapons? Could Israel trust the United States, European Union or the United Nations to come to her defense? These are the same groups that accuse Israel of using excessive force when Israel retaliates against armed gunman who have slaughtered unarmed civilians. The same groups who condemn Israel for attacking Palestinian rocket installations that nightly bombard Israeli neighborhoods. Israel must defend herself regardless of world opinion or international pressure.
