Olmert calls for completion of security fence around Jerusalem
April 28, 2006
Interim Prime Minister Olmert convened a special conference with senior officials to discuss the completion of the security fence around Israel's capital city, Jerusalem. Olmert stated that last weeks April 17th bombing in Tel Aviv happened because the bomber crossed through a breach in the security fence around Jerusalem before making his way to Tel Aviv.
The Prime Minister was given updated information on current gaps in the barrier, changes of route for the barrier, and security staffing to patrol the barrier. Olmert emphasized an immediate solution of temporary fences to be constructed in the gaps of the permanent concrete fence until the permanent barrier is completed.
The security fence has been highly successful in thwarting and intercepting would-be bombers. Daily reports from the Israeli Defense Forces report the interception and confiscation of explosives and weapons. Several bombers have even detonated their explosives prematurely at the security check points because they were unable to reach their targeted populated areas in Israel's cities.
Sami Salim Hammed, the 16 year old bomber from Tubas, Israel is reported to have crossed through a physical gap in Jerusalem's security fence. The barrier is currently patrolled by soldiers but sections of the fence are still under construction and can be accessed by pedestrians and vehicles. Olmert wants these "gaps" around Jerusalem to be sealed with temporary fences to stop this unauthorized traffic.
Olmert also wanted the security check points to be given over to civilian control in order to free up military personnel. He instructed Israel's police commissioner, Moshe Karadi, to increase police security operations and technology around Jerusalem. The director of Israel's Industry, Trade and Employment Ministry, Ra'anan Dinur, will be responsible for civilian staffing of the border crossings and is expected to submit his implementation recommendations.
Olmert concluded by saying in order to provide Israel's citizens with maximum security he would require daily updates on the construction and staffing of the security fence around Jerusalem.
