In a meeting between Vice Prime Minister Shimon Peres and the Dutch Foreign Minister Bernard Bot, Bot emphasized the need to include Muslim nations to join the international security force being deployed in southern Lebanon.

The two statesmen met at Peres' office in Tel Aviv on Tuesday, August 22, 2006. Foreign Minister Bot was on a tour of the Middle East visiting the Palestinian Territories, Lebanon and Israel. His stated aim of this particular trip was to see what the Netherlands could do to support the implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

Dr. Bernard Bot is the permanent representative of the Netherlands to the European Union in Brussels. He is also the Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Netherlands. In his meeting with Peres he stated the importance of the international force not only including European nations but also Islamic nations. Peres graciously declined the request by stating that Islamic nations are aligned with Israel's enemies and not her allies.

Vice Prime Minister Peres also cautioned the European Union that the funds that they are supplying to Lebanon could end up in the hands of Hezbollah. Citing the example of the funds given to the Palestinian people being appropriated back to Arafat's Fatah movement he stated that the funds were eventually used by Israel's enemies for terrorist activity and the deterioration of the Palestinian Authority. Peres said "there is a need to rebuild Lebanon, but not to build what will destroy it."
