Immigrants from the US receive warm welcome in Israel
July 21, 2006
Benjamin Netanyahu, former Prime Minister of Israel, was one of several Israeli leaders to publicly welcome an arriving flight of new immigrants from the United States this past Thursday. Even amid the most recent conflicts in Israel, immigrants are following a desire to relocate to the Jewish homeland.
Jewish people from all parts of the world immigrate to Israel each year. The past several years have shown a marked increase in Jewish immigrants from North America and Europe. This particular flight from the United States is the second of seventeen scheduled flights for this summer. A total of 2200 Americans are scheduled to immigrate to Israel this year.
Nefesh B’Nefesh sponsored the flight on Thursday and is an organization that assists Israeli immigrants worldwide. According to Charlie Levine, NBN’s Jerusalem branch spokesperson, NBN will have assisted over 10,000 Americans to immigrate to Israel in the last five years.
Nefesh B’Nefesh works to eliminate the common struggles that accompany any relocation process. They are active in finding employment in Israel for new immigrants, as well as neighborhoods and schools that will be appropriate for each applicant. According to Levine, 60% of the American immigrants will relocate to one of these five cities: Beit Shemesh, Modiin, Ranana, Tel-Aviv, or Jerusalem. NBN also facilitates a smooth transition by having the Israeli Ministry of Absorption on each flight so that each immigrant has practically finished with the needed immigration paperwork when they step off of the plane. This eliminates months of visits to various government offices and allows the new immigrants to start their new lives in Israel as soon as they arrive.
This week’s arrival of over 220 Americans into Israel is notably marked by the conflict raging between Israel and Lebanon. The new immigrants were met with warm greetings from many public figures thanking them for their support of the Jewish homeland. Benjamin Netanyahu told the arriving immigrants that they were the answer to Hezbollah. Netanyahu said that Aliyah (immigration to Israel) is the lifeline of Israel and that Israel is the only homeland for the Jewish people. Israel’s consul general in New York told the departing immigrants that the fact that they were making aliyah at this point in time was a vote of confidence in the security of the nation of Israel and in the victory over terrorism.
When asked why Jewish people from America would immigrate to Israel, Charlie Levine answered that it is not just a reconnection with a Jewish homeland that draws them, but that “there is an unexplainable gravitational pull on Jewish people worldwide to return to Israel."
