Wolowelsky and Reuven Ziegler, Ktav Publishing, 205 pages, $25)

Rabbi Joseph Dov Soloveitchik (1903-1993) was not only one of the 20th century’s leading experts on Jewish law, but also one of the most innovative and profound Jewish thinkers in recent generations. Drawing upon deep stores of knowledge, both religious and secular, “the Rav,” as he was known to his students, showed how Jewish law and Jewish philosophy could serve as the basis for a better and more meaningful understanding of modern life.

In recent years, various manuscripts have begun to be published from the estate of Rabbi Soloveitchik. “Festival of Freedom” is another volume in his series on the Jewish family, mourning customs and Jewish prayer. Published in English in 2006, the set is now available in an excellent Hebrew translation, by Prof. Avigdor Shinan of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Europe is increasingly fading away

By: Honor Mahony – EU Observer

The rest of the world will not wait for Europe while it bickers over institutional reform and external policy issues, says Joschka Fischer, ex-German foreign minister, warning that the risk of it becoming a “playground” for upcoming super powers grows by the day.

Tempered by his time in the US where politicians are already looking to China and India as the next powers to be, the former politician-turned-Princeton-professor has a very sober view of the European Union’s position in the world as it dusts itself off from recent 50th birthday celebrations.

Archaeologists find Ethiopia’s lost Islamic kingdom

By: AFP

French archaeologists said they have uncovered the remains of three large towns that may have been the heart of a legendary Islamic kingdom in Ethiopia.

Ancient manuscripts have long told of the kingdom of Shoa, which, between the 10th and 16th centuries straddled key trade routes between the Christian highlands and Muslim ports on the Red Sea. But Shoa’s precise place on the map has never been clear.

The National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) said a team of archaeologists had laid bare the remains of three medieval towns, Asbari, Masal, and Nora, on a high escarpment of the Rift Valley.

Analysis: Are the Saudis seeking peace?

By: Dori Gold, The Jerusalem Post

With the visit of Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice this week and the special attention she gave to the revival of the 2002 Saudi-inspired Arab Peace Initiative, expectations had been elevated that yesterday’s Riyadh Arab summit might provide a mechanism for restarting the Arab-Israeli peace process.

Certainly, Israeli diplomats had hoped that a modified peace plan might be adopted by the Arab heads of state that would leave out any references to the return of Palestinian refugees to Israel – a non-starter across the Israeli political spectrum. When that seemed unlikely, there was increasing speculation that while the formal initiative would remain unchanged, then at least some other statements would be made separately that would try to reach out to Israeli public opinion and build mutual confidence.

But the Arab Peace Initiative got off to a bad start when Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal warned Israel that its rejection of the plan would leave its fate in the hands of the “lords of war.”
